Cane Hill Hospital: The Tower on the Hill

By Pam Buttrey

ISBN: 978-0-9549582-3-7

Opened in 1883 for Surrey’s mentally ill, Cane Hill Asylum passed to London County Council in 1889. Patients arrived from all over London by horse-drawn carriage and by train. About a third were discharged, a few escaped, and many never left.

Its staff included not only medical staff, attendants and nurses but butchers, bakers, tailors, tinsmiths and farm workers. Most nursing staff were praised for their care and kindness but some were dismissed for ill-treating patients and others for a range of misdemeanours.

This book describes the life of thousands of patients and staff who lived and worked there, how the estate developed and changed over the years and its relationship with its neighbours in Coulsdon until its closure in 1992.
